Thyroid scintigraphy is a nuclear medicine technique that images the thyroid gland and functioning thyroid tissue anywhere in the body. Thyroid scintigraphy provides information about the anatomy and function of the thyroid gland. The radioactive substances routinely used in thyroid scintigraphy are technetium and iodine. Because very low doses of radioactive material are used, it is harmless; however, scintigraphy is not performed on pregnant women.
