Under the history lesson, Nolan buried a superhero origin story, and he told you so plainly. The moment Oppenheimer pulls on his hat is framed exactly like Bruce Wayne pulling on the cowl. The whole script is written in the first person, so the color you see is what he sees, and the black and white is the world judging him. There are green curtains in his kitchen that only make sense once you know which tree survived Hiroshima. There is a woman at a rally whose face melts off, and Nolan handed that role to someone very close to him.
Even the physics is sleight of hand. There is no CGI in the birth of the atom. It's glitter, a fish tank, and Nolan on his knees spinning something in front of the lens.
This is the story of how Nolan walked out on Warner after nineteen years, invented a film stock that did not exist, and turned three hours of men arguing in small rooms into the coldest best picture ever made.
