Based on the play "The Old Man" by M. Gorky. 1905. Prosperous factory owner Mastakov is in love with Sofya Markovna, the colonel's widow. She reciprocates his feelings. Mastakov is a successful man, still quite young, handsome, wealthy, and generous. He has a daughter, Tanya, and an adopted son, Pavel.
And all would be well, until a strange old man and his girlfriend appear in the area. Apparently a wandering monk, a suspicious character, circulates around Mastakov's estate, prying into his master's affairs. Soon he arrives himself, and Mastakov is horrified to recognize him as his former comrade from the penal servitude. They escaped together, but Mastakov was lucky, while the old man was caught and served his 12 years. Now the Old Man has come to Mastakov to collect his debt. It's hard to say whether Mastakov was guilty or not—murder in a drunken brawl. He didn't serve his sentence, but escaped and is happy.
