For some reason, wordpress hides the easy post/page option to turn off comments. Making it confusing for new people to figure out how to remove comments from appearing when they publish a post or page.
The key here is to always check "screen options", if you're creating a wordpress post or page, also check your screen options found at the top of the page.
Here you'll be able to add a checkmark to "discussion" and other boxes.
