Dick Dale fue pionero del sonido surf algunos le consideran uno de los precursores del Heavy Metal. En los 50 los amplificadores de guitarra eran de poca potencia 20 watts y no existían los sistemas de refuerzo de sonido, Dick los reventaba intentándole sacar el máximo rendimiento hasta las llamas. Leo Fender le vio tocar y quedó impresionado por su fuerza interpretativa. Construyó para él, el Fender Showman primer amplificador de válvulas de 100 watts y con altavoces James B. Lansing Incorporated de 15 pulgadas, sumado todo a sus cuerdas gruesas, su fuerza y su stratocaster "the best" le hizo uno de los guitarristas mas "duros" de la escena.
