This has the function of providing motility and assisting in the process of attachment to the intestinal epithelium of the insect vector, as well as to the cells of the mononuclear phagocytic system. The nucleus is located in the middle third of the cell and the kinetoplast is located anterior to the nucleus, close to the flagellar pocket.
