Backstage Community Session 06 — Jul 21, 2021
Our sixth official meetup is a special summer edition — with over 80 members of the community taking time out from backyards, patios, beaches, and idyllic Swedish summer cabins to dig deep into the latest Backstage features and updates.
Highlights:
• The new product roadmap is here (1:31)! See what features and improvements the team is prioritizing this quarter and beyond: https://backstage.io/docs/overview/ro... Have feedback on the roadmap? We want to hear from you!
• Next, the team walked through recent changes to Backstage Software Templates (5:11), including a transition from fetch:cookiecutter to fetch:template, and YAML syntax improvements.
• See the very latest on composable homepages (16:11), including a live coding demo.
• And then — Splunk! The data platform’s engineering productivity team gave us a peek into their Backstage portal (26:25). Internally known as “Pink Phonebook” — a uniquely branded name isn’t the only way the team customized Backstage to fit their engineering and tech culture. The Splunk team also:
— Added UI changes to the software catalog, so that it surfaces more data about components
— Added support for linking to external documentation by annotating an entity’s YAML file
— Made it easier to create LDAP groups, without requiring peer review
— Plus, their devs can share kudos right inside Backstage with “Bravo” badges
The Spunk team also shared how they plan to contribute back to the open source project and where they’re headed next (feedback welcome!).
