A team of experts from Amrita Center for Wireless Networks and Applications, led by Dr. Maneesha Ramesh, recently visited Wayanad’s landslide-prone areas, including Meppadi, Pozhuthana, and Vythiri. The team, sent by Amma, who is Chancellor of the university, conducted a preliminary assessment to identify critical zones for deploying site-specific Landslide Early Warning Systems.
The researchers trekked along a path from the landslides’ toe to its crown region and were able to evaluate a rapid avalanche over a distance of about 6 km with a huge altitude difference of more than 550 m.
This system aims to provide timely alerts to ensure evacuations and minimize casualties. A regional-level system with real-time risk visualization will also be implemented for authorities. Amrita’s work has earned international acclaim, including the title of World Center of Excellence in Landslide Risk Reduction.
