There is nothing more destructive to wildlife than abandoned ghost traps. We found evidence in the crawfish traps in a national forest. They had been killing animals for days or weeks on end. Most rednecks and swamp people know that an abandoned trap is really bad for wildlife. The owners of these traps did not. They created an endless cycle of death for many, many, animals. Many dead crawfish or crayfish and a baby dead turtle were found in these traps.

I'm far from an expert, but normally a crayfish trap is checked every few hours or once a day, but these were left for days or maybe weeks on end. The first crayfish died. This attracted turtles to feed on them. They drowned. Then more crayfish came in to eat the turtle. They died as well. The cycle continued for many days.
Responsible harvest of wildlife is fine if local regulations are followed, but leaving traps that create a death cycle is unacceptable. I think all outdoors folk will agree with this. I grew up in a hunting and fishing family in the South, but killing animals for no reason was not tolerated by my family or my friends.
