The root of all sin has emerged – Antiochus Epiphanes, son of King Antiochus. He was in Rome as a hostage and began to reign in the one hundred and thirty-seventh year of Greek rule. At that time, unfaithful men arose from among Israel, and they stirred up many people, saying, "Let us go and make a covenant with the nations around us. For much evil has befallen us since we separated from them." These words seemed good to them. But some of the people became incensed and went to the king, who gave them authority to introduce pagan customs. So they built a gymnasium in Jerusalem according to pagan customs. They also removed the sign of circumcision and fell away from the holy covenant. They also joined forces with the pagans and sold themselves to them to do evil. The king issued a decree for the entire kingdom: "All shall be one nation, and each shall abandon his own customs." All the nations accepted the king's command, and many of the Israelites even took pleasure in the worship he commanded. So they sacrificed to idols and profaned the Sabbath. On the fifteenth day of the month of Kislev, in the one hundred and forty-fifth year, the "abomination of desolation" was built on the altar of burnt offering, and altars were also built in the surrounding cities of Judah—incense offerings were even offered at the doors of houses and in the streets. Books of the Law that were found were torn into pieces and burned with fire. The king's decree put to death anyone with whom the Book of the Covenant was found, or whoever followed the precepts of the Law. However, many of the Israelites resolved and held fast to their resolution not to eat unclean foods. They chose to die rather than defile themselves with food and profane the holy covenant. They also gave up their lives. The wrath of God fell upon Israel.
Gospel Luke 18:35-43
As Jesus approached Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the roadside begging. Hearing that a crowd was passing by, he inquired what was happening. They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. Then he began to shout, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Those who were ahead were harassing him, telling him to be quiet. But he shouted even louder, "Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!" Jesus stopped and ordered him to be brought to him. When he came near, he asked him, "What do you want me to do for you?" He replied, "Lord, that I may give you my sight." Jesus replied, "Get your sight; your faith has healed you." Immediately he regained his sight and followed him, praising God.
