Films are in reality a compilation of images that tell a story. I feel strongly that you need to learn to create amazing images at the start of your filmmaking career. If you've mastered the features of Photoshop and composing images, then I think you are primed and ready to make more elaborate films. That's why I'm spending time on this tutorial discussing the processing of some of our action shots.

This photo is a still image from a GoPro Hero4 that I shot on the lake teaching my son to wakeboard. This image was post processed in Photoshop to help bring everything into proper exposure. To get that perfect exposure though, I needed to use some masking techniques.

The masking of an image is possible in Lightroom, but I prefer to do most of these more advanced photo edits in Photoshop.

The first step in this edit was to use the camera raw filter. From there, I exposed for August and myself. Then, I duplicated the layers and created a sky and water layer. Both of these I manipulated to make them stand out, and masked out everything else in the image. The end result, was pretty stunning and represented better what we were seeing on the water (I think).

Don't forget to follow both Jonas and I on our Instagrams. We like to give some behind-the-scenes views of what we're working on! We'll also spend some time discussing more photo techniques in the coming months.
