Briksdalsbreen Glacier - PERFECT Hike Destination in Norway
Briksdalsbreen Glacier is one of the most popular arms of Jostedalsbreen, the largest glacier on the European mainland. The glacier is located on the northern side of the Briksdalen Valley, approximately 25 kilometers south of the town of Olden.
Olden is where large cruise ships dock, and from there, tourists travel by bus to Briksdalsbreen, often creating significant queues on the trails during the peak tourist season.
However, the hike to Briksdalsbreen is accessible year-round, so we prefer to visit in spring or autumn. During these seasons, the crowds are sparse, and the glacier's blue ice emerges in all its glory from beneath the winter snow.
There's a lot of conflicting information online about the hiking time and elevation gain, so we took measurements ourselves and shared the details in our video.
We’ve also included the price for the small "Troll Car" vehicles that transport tourists to and from the glacier, starting at the store near the parking lot Briksdalsbre Fjellstove. During the summer, these cars run on a schedule, but in other seasons, they must be booked in advance on the website:

The hike is not challenging, but in spring, winter, and autumn, the trail can be slippery. Water splashes from the waterfall often freeze on the main ascent, so bringing shoe spikes is highly recommended.
We believe every traveler to Norway should visit the Jostedalsbreen glacier! Briksdalsbreen is an excellent choice, as it offers not only a stunning view of the glacier but also an easy walk through a picturesque valley. This hike is a great way to assess your physical fitness and prepare for more challenging hikes in the future.
Along the trail, you’ll also encounter some of Norway's notable sights:
Kleivafossen waterfall. At different times of the year the strength of its flow changes, it also depends on the rain that passed the day before.
Giant cauldrons or as they are called in Norway - Jettegrytene. Giant potholes in the ground formed during the melting of glaciers, an important part of the landscape and nature of Norway.
Cozy houses with grass on the roof with which tourists love to take pictures. And here you can take a photo against the background of a glacier!
The stormy blue glacial river Briksdalselva and of course the unique blue lake at the foot of the glacier.
Glaciers are both very beautiful and very sad since every year they melt more and more and disappear, retreating higher and hiding in the mountains. Looking at Briksdalsbreen it is hard to believe that back in 2008 the glacier came down to the lake itself. And now it is at an altitude of about 250 meters above it.
