Phlegm is a thick, sticky substance produced by mucous membranes in the respiratory tract, mainly in response to irritation, infection, or inflammation. Unlike mucus, which naturally keeps tissues moist, phlegm specifically refers to mucus generated in the lungs and lower airways. Its primary role is to trap and expel irritants, pathogens, and foreign particles through coughing or swallowing.

Phlegm is produced by goblet cells and submucosal glands in the airways. Tiny hair-like structures called cilia move it upward through the airways in a process known as the mucociliary escalator. Its color, consistency, and quantity can indicate various health conditions. Clear phlegm often signals normal respiratory function, while yellow or green may suggest an infection. Blood-streaked phlegm can indicate serious conditions like pneumonia or lung cancer, while thick or frothy phlegm might be linked to asthma or pulmonary edema.

Excessive phlegm can cause coughing, wheezing, or breathing difficulties as the body works to clear the airways. Chronic conditions like COPD and cystic fibrosis often result in persistent phlegm due to ongoing inflammation and impaired clearance. In addition to trapping harmful particles, phlegm contains immune components like antibodies and enzymes that fight infections.

When the body can’t clear phlegm effectively, medical treatments such as expectorants or airway clearance therapy may be needed. Phlegm’s protective and diagnostic functions make it essential for respiratory health, helping maintain clear airways and indicating underlying health issues.
