For your consideration
1984 Volvo 242 coupe
$7,500
They are as safe as a tank, strong as a moose, aerodynamic as a brick and as reliable as the rising sun. The Volvo 240 series is truly one of the most practical collector cars you can own. The successful 240 series started in 1974 and ran until 1993 with over 2.8 million cars produced in the form of wagons (245) sedans (244) and coupes (242). They made an excellent commuter car, and the wagons were perfect for small families. Not many people know this, but they made excellent race cars as well, and were quite successful in group A rally/touring racing. The 242 coupes had the least number of units produced each year, making them a rare sight today. The year 1984 was the very last year Volvo would offer a two-door variant. 1984 is also the year with the lowest production numbers for coupes, with only 7,887 units produced, making 1984 the rarest of them all. How many are left?
This particular ’84 has been adult/collector owned and has been very well cared for since day one. It has its original 2.3-liter FI inline 4 cyl. and 4 speed standard transmission with push button 5th gear overdrive. It has just 87,919 miles on it since new, and for a Volvo 240 that’s just barely broken in. The interior is all original right down to the working radio, aside from the typical dash cracks the interior is in overall wonderful condition. The 242 has been outfitted with some great performance goodies including Factory aluminum Volvo Virgo “turbo” wheels, BFG Advantage T/A sport tires, Bilstien shocks, Strut tower GT braces, IPD aluminum skid plate/belly pan, IPD lowering sport springs, IPD front and rear sway bars, IPD lower chassis tie bars, IPD adjustable panhard bar, IPD adjustable rear torque bars, slotted rotors, performance brake pads, sport turbo steering wheel etc. This combo, mated to the already ridged 240 body design, makes for an excellent, confident cornering car that rivals the characteristics of many sports cars I have driven. The exterior body and paint are in fair condition. (See photos on our Facebook). The original paint shows very well, but upon a close inspection one can notice minor flaws expected for a car of this age. The engine bay and undercarriage are in overall nice condition. All oils, fluids, filters etc. have been recently changed front to back along with any general maintenance. Also worth noting is the Volvo will need some minor exhaust work performed soon. The AC system has been converted to the new style, it was working great but last year the compressor started leaking and it lost its charge, this will need to be addressed to have working ac again.
This 242 has its original manuals, brochures and some dealer paperwork. Per the paper trail this car was built in Belgium, Germany (as all 242’s were) then shipped to its port of importation in New York. The car was then delivered to its authorized dealer, Bay Ridge Volvo American Inc. in Brooklyn, NY. The story is the original owner got this car for his wife, they were an older couple and when she passed away he parked the car. It sat in his garage for many years showing only 34,000 miles. The car was then purchased by its second owner, a Volvo enthusiast, who brought it back to operating/roadworthy condition. He cared for the car, maintaining and preserving it until 2014 when he listed it for sale on New York Craigslist (a short write up can be found on the Bring a Trailer website about this CL ad from '14). In 2014 he sold the car with 37,000 miles to its third owner, a woman in Massachusetts, she drove it for a few years. Then the 4th owner, myself, purchased the car April 2nd of 2016 with 54,000 miles on it. I have driven and enjoyed this car for the last several years bringing it to its current 87,919 miles.
One of the neatest stories with this car under my ownership was in March/April of 2021. It was asked to be used as a background vehicle in the filming of the movie The Tender Bar, an Amazon original film directed by George Clooney. This film (although filmed in Boston) is set in New York in the 80’s. It was amazing to watch the level of detail it takes to make everything on set look correct, every car received period correct license plates, inspection and registration stickers. I have some great stories about my involvement with this film but it was very neat to see the car look as it did back when it was purchased new with its 1985 NY tags. This car has taken me on many adventures, it has never let me down or left me stranded. I have contact with both the second and third owners of this car and I am confident they would both agree that this is a very special car. It is now time to pass the little yellow Volvo onto its next caretaker. Will it be you?

Being a fairly clean original car, with lower mileage and all the right upgrades, I believe this car is fairly priced at $7,500.
