Even before Solidarity was registered in 1980, Wałęsa promised that we would build a second Japan in Poland. He repeated this claim many times afterward. But at the time, such statements were considered blasphemy. An economic chasm separated our two countries.
Today, after three decades of transformation, we have caught up with Japan in prosperity. I don't think anyone even noticed, and we certainly didn't celebrate it with much fanfare.
