Ya know...early in my career, when I first fell into the world of instructional design and eLearning development for a major clothing retailer, I had a great leader who always took a moment to remind us:

“We’re in the business of selling socks and underwear—we can’t lose sight of that.”

It was simple, but it stuck with me. And today, as our industry navigates the rise of AI, the explosion of new tools, and the never-ending flood of buzzword-laden job titles and overnight "experts" with no expertise, I find myself wanting to offer the same reminder:

You're not in the business of learning.
You’re in the business of the business.

Future-proofing your career in this industry isn’t about…

Mastering prompt engineering or using the latest AI tool to generate more static content at scale
What you call yourself—ID, LXD, LX Architect, Learning Ninja, or otherwise
Creating cinematic, gamified escape rooms in Articulate Storyline
Obsessing over whether you follow ADDIE, SAM, or some Frankenstein blend of both
Automating slide decks or pumping out quizzes faster than ever before

It’s not that those things aren’t interesting, valuable, or worth exploring. But they’re not what will keep you relevant, trusted, or employed.

Because frankly? The business doesn’t care.

They don’t care what tool you used.
They don’t care how many interactions your course has.
And they certainly don’t care how clever your knowledge checks are.

What they care about is this:

Are you solving the right problems?
Do you understand the work their teams are doing?
Are you helping them hit their goals faster, cheaper, or better?

So, if you really want to future-proof your career, here’s where to start:

Rather than waiting for the business to come to you and “give you a seat at the table,” go embed yourself in the business. Learn how it runs. Understand what keeps people up at night. And become someone who helps them fix it.

Ask yourself:

Where does your business make its money?
Do you have real relationships with people in those revenue-driving areas?
What are their goals for 2025 and beyond?
How do those goals show up in the work you’re doing?
When’s the last time you sat with your learners to understand what their day-to-day actually looks like?

Future-proofing your L&D career doesn’t start with tools or trends. It starts with trust. Build it by being someone who’s embedded in the business, not just adjacent to it.
