The legend of Romulus and Remus is the first great legend of Rome, and it tells of its founding, back in 753 BC, before the world was even round, made up of several continents, when the Greeks believed themselves to be the center of the universe and the Romans were barely crawling, only to later dethrone them. It is, without a doubt, the most important legend of Rome, and it tells of two brothers, grandsons of Numitor, who was a descendant of a Trojan hero and, it is said, the legitimate king of the city of Alba Longa. But Numitor had a brother, Amulius, and, as often happens in these family tales, Numitor was dethroned by Amulius.
Amulius, to ensure that no one would later claim his throne, condemned Numitor's daughter, Rhea Silvia, to be a priestess and, therefore, a perpetual virgin, incapable of leaving descendants behind. However, as history shows, these tactics of kings who dethrone kings usually always leave a loose end, and from that loose end—in this case, Numitor's own daughter, as well as the gods—arose a revolt, a revolution that changed the course of history and, in this anecdote, ended up founding Rome.
