UNCOMMON GAME DESIGN TECHNIQUE EXAMPLE: UNIQUE MECHANICS (USP or Unique Selling Point)
Players are able to adjust the shape and size of an object depending on their position
in the world.
This unique core mechanic was initially formulated during a 2013 gamejam, the
7DFPS (Seven‑Day First‑Person Shooter) Gamejam, also the origin of the original pro‑
totype for Superhot (SUPERHOT TEAM, 2016). This highlights how the pressurised
“try it and see if it sticks” nature of gamejams can lead to totally original (sometimes
accidental) mechanics that may not surface in a normal, planned game develop‑
ment environment, and would suggest why many game companies have now adopted
“in‑house” game jams at regular times throughout the year.
