What are the causes of change in your world?
Some, if not most of you will recall traditional ideas of what motivates people to find progress in every aspect of their lives. Those ideas are pain, risk, fear — all these negative feelings that we want to avoid, but that for some are a must if you want to grow. “No pain, no gain”, is the phrase you’ll often hear when a call for improvement is made.
But is that really so? Do people need to be in pain in order to change their lives for the better? Is it really a factor that leads people into making the best decisions?
In my personal experience, I’ve seen otherwise. The people that I’ve worked with don’t have pain, fear and risk as their causes of change. Instead, they just want to be better and bring improvement to their lives with something different.
That’s why I want to bring up the No-Pain Principle. Because this idea that we need to be in pain to seek and achieve change is clearly something that belongs in a museum. The No-Pain Principle sees buyer behaviour and persuasion as the real factors behind someone’s drive to inspire change within themselves and in others around them.
However, the conversation is still stuck in this old axiom that you have to be in pain in order to change. We need to change the record. No one needs to be in pain to improve. A drive for progress and be better in what you do are the real causes of change.
