In addition to the nucleus, the mitochondria within a cell also contain DNA. Mutations in this mtDNA can cause different diseases. Understanding these diseases and mitochondrial biology in general would be greatly aided if there was a tool that could edit the mtDNA. Whilst CRISPR systems are effective for nuclear gene edits, they currently cannot be used for mtDNA edits. In this video i will discuss a base editor system that can be targeted to mtDNA developed in David Liu's lab.
