And so we make a knife from 110X18M-ShD steel.
What is it?
Corrosion-resistant bearing steel
Where to get it, what to buy?
Precision equipment with high wear requirements. Namely, precision bearings ... on which this precision equipment works.
Availability.
Relatively rare, perhaps because the material is expensive. A thousand or one and a half per kilogram
Applicability.
A universal material, both for food and for household needs.
Analogues abroad.
USA — 440C, Europe — X105CrMo17, Japan — SUS440C and remotely AUS 10. Sandvic 19C27 is often written as an analogue, but it falls short in all respects.
Composition features:
It definitely contains:
Carbon: 1.1%
Chromium: 18%
Molybdenum: somewhere around 0.5%
And it probably contains:
Vanadium: 0.5%
Tungsten: 0.3%
Titanium: 0.2%
And even a little nickel: 0.2%
Different sources write different compositions.
In operation.
Forging. From 1180 to 850 degrees.
Quenching. Heating up to 850, Quenching temperature 1080 with a hold of 3 minutes and into oil until it stops.
Cryotreatment at -80 for 1 hour reduces the amount of residual austenite from 34% to 9%
Temperature. 150 degrees for 2 hours will be 61 Rockwell units. You can also 400 ° for 5 hours and the secondary hardness will leave us with the same 61.
Features.
In fact, the steel grade is 110X18M, the letter Ш means Electroslag remelting process, and the letter Д means Vacuum-arc. This means that the material is especially purified from sulfur, and the carbides are smaller in size due to the first method. The second one cleans gas impurities. This has a very cool effect on the final quality of the steel as well as its price.
The material is stainless, hard and wear-resistant. Accordingly, grinding and sharpening such a thing is a thankless task. It is good that the quality and composition of the steel makes it resistant to both impacts and abrasion.
It can only be etched in alkali, but it is not clear why this should be done.
Verdict (in my biased opinion).
The requirements for skill and practice are surprisingly not high, again two remelting technologies will help with forging.
Heat treatment is not so difficult, molybdenum forgives a lot. But you will get the ideal with ideal temperature control.
Suitable for thick and thin knives. In principle, a universal high-quality material.
Overall - expensive and very cool.
