Bladder weakness and urinary problems are a major burden and a source of shame for many people with multiple sclerosis (MS). In this interview, experienced neurourologist Prof. Arndt van Ophoven from Marienhospital in Herne explains the causes, treatment options, and effects of bladder dysfunction in MS. What options are available to improve quality of life despite bladder problems? Why is addressing these symptoms early and openly so important? Prof. van Ophoven shares his expertise on topics such as incontinence, overactive bladder, and new therapeutic approaches that can give those affected hope and make everyday life easier.

Table of Contents: Introduction – Who is Prof. Arndt van Ophoven? General understanding and management of bladder weakness Therapeutic options and quality of life Multidisciplinary approach and patient empowerment Research and innovation Quick round of introductions Closing remarks Introduction – Who is Prof. Arndt van Ophoven? My name is Arne van Ophoven, and I head the Department of Neuro-Urology at Marienhospital in Herne, a branch of the University Hospital in Bochum. As a neuro-urologist, I have the task—I would even say the privilege—of doing nothing but diagnosing and treating bladder and pelvic floor dysfunctions all day long. Classic urological topics such as cancer treatment for kidney cancer, prostate cancer, or stone treatment are not part of our remit. We focus on bladder dysfunction in the pelvic floor, particularly, but not exclusively, in patients with underlying neurological conditions. And we also have the privilege of treating a large number of patients with bladder dysfunction resulting from multiple sclerosis. We have developed a considerable level of expertise in this area over the past few years.

] , ... What advice would you give to people with multiple sclerosis who are experiencing bladder weakness? Overcome the shame, talk about it, find the courage—whatever helps, so that you can say, "Come on, this isn't acceptable to me. I'm suffering from the worry, or from the fact that I'm wetting my pants. I need help."

Where can people find you and your research online? Just type in my name, then maybe add "University Hospital Bochum" and/or "Marienhospital Herne" or "Sauerland Clinic Hachen," and it should pop up.
