How can a sponge, which has holes, hold liquid?
Sponges are able to hold liquid because they have a porous structure made up of cells that can absorb and retain water. The holes in a sponge are called pores, and they allow water to enter the sponge and be absorbed by the cells. Additionally, the structure of the sponge creates a capillary action which helps to hold the liquid inside. When a sponge is squeezed, the liquid is forced out of the pores and can be wrung out, but the sponge will retain some of the liquid within its structure.
