Best EDC Watch Seiko SKX007
What makes a watch an every day watch? that’s a really hard question to answer. For some an every day watch must meet a certain criteria, look a certain way or be a certain brand. For me is a combination of a few things. My everyday watch must be stainless steel, must be water resistant at least 100m, be a strap monster and come from a watch brand with heritage. As I’ve had a lot of time to spend with my watches lately, I’ve absolutely fallen in love all over again with my Seiko SKX007. This to me is a perfect every day watch. It has many downfalls, but they’re forgivable because the good in my opinion outweigh the bad by a land slide. Talk about heritage, Seiko has been around for well over a century and this watch is entirely made in house. Not to mention their flagship company Grand Seiko is arguably producing some of the best bang for buck luxury watches in the market today! The SKX has a screw down crown that helps it obtain that 200m water resistance and it’s also ISO certified, that’s more than enough for every day use. The rotating bezel not only can save your life under water but it can help you in many different every day situations. The lumibright lume is insanely bright and useful, it’s entirely made of 316L stainless steel and although it’s not the perfect size, it’s still extremely wearable with its 42mm case. The handsome black dial practically can adapt to pretty much any wardrobe. Sure it’s faux paux to wear a diver with a suit, but if James Bond can pull it off so can you. The movement is nothing to rave about, but since 1996 the 7S26 movement has been a workhorse. Sure it lacks hand winding and hacking, but it does feature a quick set day/date function that comes in handy for day to day life. The hardlex crystal is not ideal for an everyday watch, but it stands up to the test. One of the major downfalls for me personally is the OEM jubilee bracelet, sure it’s comfortable, but the folded end links don’t hold up to constant strap changes. However that’s a simple fix, take for example this well crafter president style uncle Seiko bracelet. It elevated the watch to a completely different level. In my opinion if you’re still debating whether to buy the SKX or the new Seiko 5 that looks just like it , the choice is clear stick with the SKX. Sure since it was announced that the SKX was going to be discontinued prices have gone up , but honestly you won’t regret it. You can also upgrade the parts in this SKX, some of the more popular mods are swapping out the crystal for sapphire and the movement for an NH35 movement that can be hacked and hand wound.
