The Tata group has replaced Chinese mobile phone manufacturer Vivo as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for 2022 and 2023 seasons, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials have said. A Tata Sons spokesperson confirmed the development.
The salt-to-software group is likely to pay ₹300 crore per year, about 60% of what Vivo would have paid as the title sponsor of IPL for the next two seasons, a person aware of the matter told ET on condition of anonymity, even as the BCCI and Tata group did not disclose financial details of the deal. As per the contract, Vivo will have to pay the remaining amount.
Tatas will replace Chinese smartphone makers Vivo as title sponsor of the Indian Premier League. BCCI will be getting Rs. 1,124 crore for the next two years of which Tata will pay around Rs. 670 crore and Vivo the rest. This came after Vivo decided to pull out three months before the start of IPL 2022. Vivo had two of its five-year (2018-22) contract still in place and the rights will now be transferred to the Indian conglomerate.
The association of Chinese mobile-maker, VIVO, has come to an end with Tata replacing the smartphone brand as IPL's title sponsor from the 2022 season onwards. The decision over the sponsorship change was taken during the IPL Governing Council meeting on Tuesday.
VIVO had pulled out of IPL sponsorship in 2020 due to the rising anti-China sentiment in the country. While VIVO returned as the chief sponsor in 2021, the association is now set to end completely ahead of the 2022 edition, as per a report in Cricbuzz.
