As the ASEAN region continues to develop, it requires higher energy demand, while also committing to reduce its greenhouse gas (GHG) emission and promoting sustainability. The region’s energy transition involves increasing renewable energy sources, improving energy efficiency, adopting new technologies, reducing dependency on imported fuel whilst at the same time ensuring energy security and affordability. The energy transition in ASEAN, whilst presenting both opportunities and challenges for the region, requires significant investments, infrastructure development, policy reforms and capacity building.
In pursuit of net zero emissions by as early as 2050, Malaysia recently announced a revised target of 70% renewables in the power mix by 2050. Under this aggressive target, natural gas is expected to continue to play an important role in clean energy transition with Malaysia Energy Transition Outlook forecasting this cleanest burning fuel to constitute between 34% to 52% in the total primary energy supply in 2050.
This Industry Talk #2 will be exploring how the 7th ASEAN Energy Outlook (AEO), the complementary document for ASEAN Plan of Action for Energy Cooperation (APAEC), will support ASEAN members states, like Malaysia, in navigating towards a just and sustainable energy transition.
