Hasta uttanasana, also known as raised arm pose, is a standing yoga pose that's the second and eleventh pose in the Surya Namaskar sequence. The name comes from the Sanskrit words hasta, meaning hand, ut, meaning intense, tan, meaning stretch, and asana, which means yoga or posture. In this pose, the arms rise up in salute to the sun, opening the heart to receiving its energy.
Benefits of hasta uttanasana include:
Stretching: Stretches the muscles of the abdomen, shoulders, spine, and chest
Strengthening: Strengthens the legs, arms, and spine
Improving digestion: Improves digestion and tones the abdominal area
Increasing range of motion: Increases range of motion in the shoulder joint and spine
Opening the chest: Opens the chest and heart to allow for deep, full breaths
To perform hasta uttanasana, the yogi begins in tadasana, then raises both arms overhead with palms meeting, tilting the head, neck, and upper body gently backward while gazing up at the thumbs.
