Aircraft ELT (emergency locator transmitter)
Welcome back ladies and gentlemen, here’s a quick understanding of how emergency locator transmitters work. Now this is not something that we want to experience or something that we want to hear, but the systems are in place in order to find to the incident site.
Aircraft are not only equipped with redundancy for functionality, but also preparedness for the worst events.
One other thing, I didn’t mention is that aircraft are also equipped with underwater locator beacons, they function similar to the black boxes underwater beacons. They are attached on the inside of the aircraft skin, and it will activate when submerged. All of these systems are independent of each other as to have multiple sources where the frequency can occur.
As for the G force loads.. it’s a bit difficult to find the exact number for different manufacturers, but here’s what I found though research.
upwards 2.0 - 3.0 g
forwards 9.0 g
sidewards 1.5 g
rearwards 6.0 - 8.0 g
downwards 4.5 - 6.0 g.
These are not exact numbers my friends, please feel free to fact check me and educate me if you have better information on this. There also an FAA document with some information Advisory Circular (AC 91-44A)
