In his interview with RadioLabour, ITF's Fisheries Campaign Lead for Ireland, Michael O'Brien argues migrant fishers working onboard vessels fishing in Irish waters should be integrated into the country's Critical Skills Permit scheme, which is run by the Irish Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment.
The Critical Skills Permit scheme is much better for migrant workers. Extending this scheme and its pathways to documentation to migrant fishers working Ireland is a step in the right direction towards safer, more decent work. It's also about empowering fishers to stand up for their human and labour rights on the job without fear of having their visa cancelled by their employer.
