Leave Pakistan, But Why? | Hashir Irshad | Episode 49
Pakistan has 25 million children out of school. It spends less than 2% of GDP on education. Its public universities are producing graduates who cannot find work. Its best graduates are leaving — and they are not coming back. In this episode of HashCritical, I do not offer comfort. I offer honesty: about how we got here, what is actually broken, whether anything can be fixed, and whether the people who can leave should.
I examine the structural failures of Pakistan's education system from the ground up — chronic underfunding and what it actually looks like in a classroom, the collapse of teacher quality and how teacher training became a patronage exercise, the two-tier system that educates elites and warehouses everyone else, the role of the madrassa network in filling the vacuum the state abandoned, the HEC's failures at university level, the brain drain that accelerates every year and what it costs the country, and finally the hardest question: are there real solutions, or are we describing a patient who has already died?
I am not telling anyone to leave. I am not telling anyone to stay. I am saying that the answer to that question deserves honesty — not nationalism, not guilt, and not false hope. If you are educated, skilled, and have options, that is a real decision with real consequences either way. This episode is for the people making it, and for the people who already made it and are still carrying the weight of it.
