Many popular commercial NASes and DIY builds feature their own custom-built operating systems designed for NAS usage - typically featuring a web interface for configuring your storage and installing containerized applications. The irony is, these OSes are usually just abstractions upon what was already a feature complete Linux distribution which can handle the same job just fine. That's exactly what I'm covering today - taking a bog-standard Linux installation and tuning it for my use cases in my homelab.
