The School To Prison Pipeline is a Myth. Here's Why
Something that gets mentioned a lot on social media and on television is the concept of the “school-to-prison pipeline.” The basic idea behind this concept is that black and/or brown kids are placed into school systems that simply get them prepared for the prison system. This idea is “proven” with data that shows how poorly black students perform in test scores and also how underfunded and understaffed their schools are. An implied notion here is that these people do not belong in mainstream American society and they should be put away. But the facts, once examined do not back up that notion at all.
First of all, many black and brown (especially black) students begin to fail in school before school begins. All children should have some type of education at home before they become school-aged. Knowing how to tie their own shoes, write their own name, color within the lines, and count to ten, among other things, should be basic skills a child has before entering the first year of elementary school. The problem is that most black and brown kids do not have that type of education. So they are already behind, and test scores display their unpreparedness in elementary school.
Second, a school will only be as good as the behavior of the students inside. If you have a handful of bad kids terrorizing other kids and teachers in the school, a dangerous environment not conducive for learning is created. Good teachers quit and good students tend to struggle. Test scores and graduation rates go down. Then some level of corruption may happen at this point in the school system itself. Bad test scores and attendance rates are overlooked. Kids are simply pushed through the system although they are fully unprepared for the next level of their education.
This so-called school-to-prison pipeline is no more than a lack of students being prepared at home for school and life in general. Teachers are not there to raise children nor babysit them. Their objective is to teach. It’s not their fault that some kids are better equipped to receive education than others.
