Atom: The Rise and Sunset of GitHub's Text Editor
Atom was a versatile, open-source text and source-code editor created by GitHub and launched in 2014. Renowned for its highly customizable nature, the application was built using the Electron framework, allowing developers to modify it using web technologies like HTML and CSS. After serving as a foundational tool for the developer community for several years, GitHub officially discontinued support for the editor in December 2022. This decision was made to shift organizational focus toward modern cloud-based development tools like Visual Studio Code and GitHub Codespaces. Despite its retirement, the software's legacy continues through a community-led project called Pulsar and a spiritual successor named Zed.
