ASME & ASTM - Magnetic Particle Testing - Contradictions
Pie Gauge or Pie Indicator is being used since long in magnetic particle testing. There has been conflicts for the purpose of its use.
Let’s get the purpose clarified.
1. Article 7 of ASME Section V: 2021 mentions the use of this field indicator to demonstrate the adequacy of the magnetic field (Even though I was never in this opinion)
2. Article 25 of ASME Section V has adopted ASTM E 709 : 2015, where the restriction of using pie indicator was not defined.
3. Latest version of ASTM E-709 : 2021 from ASTM International clarified the misconception very clearly where it states that Pie Indicator is not to be used for magnetic field adequacy.
I am sure that in coming edition of ASME Section V from ASME (The American Society of Mechanical Engineers) will resolve the conflict.
These contradictory statement from the various code and standards are not to be seen as conflict but evolvement. They are evolving.
