For four decades, Calisto Tanzi transformed Parmalat from a small Italian family business into a global food giant. Until a hole of more than 14 billion euros was discovered in the company's balance sheet.
Founded in 1961 in Parma, Italy, Parmalat quickly stood out for creating Long Life Milk, which used packaging from the Swedish company Tetra Pak and made the milk's shelf life significantly longer than the competition.
In addition to an innovative product, Parmalat began investing heavily in sports sponsorships to strengthen its brand. One of these sports was Formula 1, sponsoring the Brabham team in the 1970s, with Niki Lauda and later Nelson Piquet.
In the 1990s, the Italian giant took an even bigger step with its strategy in the world of sports. The company bought a football team: Parma.
In Brazil, Parmalat became famous for its victorious partnership with Palmeiras, which lasted from 1992 to 2000 and resulted in numerous titles for the São Paulo club. In other countries, the company sponsored clubs such as Real Madrid, Boca Juniors, and Peñarol.
In 1996, another major marketing coup in Brazil, with the company carrying out the iconic "Mammals" advertising campaign, created by the prestigious advertising agency DM9, which is still considered one of the greatest campaigns in history.
The company's resounding success came to an end in 2003, when it was discovered that Parmalat had been inflating its profits and sales for years, causing a deficit of more than 14 billion euros. At the time, the company employed 36,000 people worldwide.
