Batocera is a great, free application that can turn your Windows, Linux or Mac computer into a retro gaming system!
Simply image a USB drive, plug it in and play pretty much every console, computer or arcade system that you can think of. No need to install or alter anything on your main computer hard drive. This is a self contained system that runs directly from the USB stick. Having said that, if you have a computer that you want to dedicate to retro gaming, then you can absolutely install Batocera to the internal storage and boot from that permanently.
