Vertical separation of the instruments explained with SIR Audio StandardEQ
In this video we want to explain the separation of the instruments the vertical (up & down) which is achieved with #equalization as opposed to the more known horizontal which is normally achieved with panning. This will be the first part of a series about equalization that we'll be releasing as we progress on the best way to explain this important topic.
Note: the following examples have been greatly exaggerated to facilitate understanding, nobody mixes like that (but if you want to, by all means...)

For example if we use a high pass filter in this guitar track we will hear as the low frequencies disappear the interpretation given by our brain is that the bottom of the sound disappears until finally there is only a bright and small sound that seems come from the roof.
If we cut the lower half of the guitar completely we could cut the upper half of the #bass and make it sound like it comes from the floor so although both instruments are panned in the center they would not sound superimposed since one would be on top of the other.
If now we reproduce both at the same time we will hear how each one is easily understood since there is no superimposition. If we roll back the filters to a more conservative position we will see how they interlace again and it is more difficult to hear each one separately.
Of course, although this method increases the intelligibility on the other hand it destroys the sound, that is why the ultimate goal of the mixer is to find the ideal balance between naturalness and definition. Every example is different... For example, we will see that the kick has important freqs and energy on both sides of the spectrum which coincide with both bass and guitar. In these cases we have to learn to see the mix as a whole where some parts are superimposed naturally to create more complex sounds that support each other... this is part of what we call a "grooving #mix".
