Transport is the highest emitting sector of the UK economy, accounting for 24% of greenhouse gas emissions emissions. To reach net zero, we must accelerate the uptake of EVs from around 500,000 today to 23.2 million by 2032. But, according to research by The University of Southampton, many EV drivers are dissatisfied by charging on longer journeys.
The University of Southampton is researching ways AI can be harnessed to enable drivers to optimise their journey around charging networks and make personalised decisions about journey cost versus journey time. Their app offers multiple routes, providing details on charging facilities, cost and time. An AI algorithm then learns drivers' preferences to optimise future results enabling EV drivers to make the most efficient use of the charging network, reducing the need for more EV charging stations and hopefully increasing the up-take of EVs to benefit our net zero journey.
