In 1967, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, a postgraduate student at Cambridge University, made a groundbreaking discovery while surveying the sky using a newly constructed radio telescope. Working under her supervisor, Antony Hewish, Bell Burnell detected unusual, regular radio pulses in the data. At first, the signals were so regular that she and her team considered the possibility of extraterrestrial origin, even nicknaming the source “LGM” (for “Little Green Men”). However, they soon realized it was a naturally occurring phenomenon.
This discovery led to the identification of the first pulsar—a rapidly rotating neutron star emitting beams of radio waves, later named PSR B1919+21. This finding was crucial in advancing our understanding of astrophysics, as it provided evidence for the existence of neutron stars, which had been theorized but never observed. Although Antony Hewish received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1974 for the work, Jocelyn Bell Burnell’s role in the discovery was not formally recognized by the Nobel Committee, sparking discussions about recognition in scientific discoveries.
