Squirrel monkeys are native to the tropical rainforests of South America. They usually forage in the medium and lower levels of the forest and sleep close to the canopy. Squirrel monkey groups - or troops - may be made up of as many as 300 individuals. The females are the dominant members of the group.
Squirrel monkeys are very agile; they often run throughout the forest on branches.
Female squirrel monkeys nurse and care for their infants until they are independent. The fathers take no part in raising young.
Het doodshoofdaapje dankt zijn naam aan het witte masker waardoor zijn kopje wat weg heeft van een schedel. Het dier leeft in grote groepen van soms wel 250 dieren, hoog in de bomen van het Zuid-Amerikaanse oerwoud.
