"OLD" YORK in ENGLAND: Vikings, Religious War and incredible architecture!
York was founded by the Romans in 71 AD, and to this day, its buildings can be seen in the best-preserved city walls in England. Its name comes from Jorvic, due to the Viking invasions in 866 (the sound of J becomes I in several Norse and Germanic languages).
Furthermore, York has the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe and has experienced several conflicts, such as the Hundred Years' War, the Wars of the Roses, and Henry VIII's religious reformation.
It was here that Guy Fawkes, the revolutionary who nearly blew up Parliament in the 17th century and is today a symbol of protest and anonymity, was born.
York is the most important city in northern England, and you can combine Bamburgh Castle and Edinburgh in Scotland on the same trip.
