The story takes place in Italy in the 1940s. Two young people are in love, but they can't be together because their families are feuding. Soon, the girl discovers she's pregnant, and to escape the shame, she leaves for Argentina, where she becomes a housekeeper for a wealthy woman, Guerrero. Since Guerrero is unable to have children, she adopts Bernarda's young daughter. A young man, Corrado, leaves Italy because Bernarda's family is persecuting him. He comes to Argentina, where he marries another woman. He has a daughter who is the spitting image of his first child with Bernarda. After Guerrero's death, Isabel, Bernarda's daughter, discovers she is the daughter of a simple housekeeper, which hurts her dignity. Concealing her origins, she marries millionaire Fernando. But the girl's happiness is short-lived. As a result of a car accident, she is disfigured. The police declare her dead. Not long before these events, Fernando meets a girl who is the spitting image of his wife, and he falls in love with her... And so, returning home, Isabel learns about her sister, who is her husband's new wife...
