John is deported to Terezin, known as Theresienstadt in German, a walled town in the Czech Republic, sixty kilometres north of Prague. It has been turned into a ghetto and labour camp for Austrian and Czech Jews. There, John lives in an old school house with almost forty other boys in a single classroom.
John Freund was born in 1930 in České Budějovic, Czecholslovakia. John’s family was deported to Theresienstadt and then Auschwitz. The American troops liberated him in 1945 and he immigrated to Canada in 1948. John and his wife, Nora, live in Toronto.
