Welcome to Chapter 2 – Skeleton Introduction from BD Chaurasia’s General Anatomy.

The human skeleton consists of a strong yet lightweight internal framework made up of bones, cartilages, and joints. In this lecture, we discuss the definition, overview, and importance of the skeletal system in detail.
The skeleton is divided into two major parts:

Axial Skeleton – consisting of the skull, vertebral column, ribs, sternum, and hyoid.

Appendicular Skeleton – consisting of the pectoral girdle, pelvic girdle, upper limbs, and lower limbs.

We also explain the total number of bones in the human body, including the differences between an adult skeleton (206 bones) and a newborn skeleton (around 270 bones) due to the presence of multiple cartilaginous structures and unfused bones.

This lecture covers the functions of the skeleton such as:

Providing rigid support to the body

Protection of vital organs like the brain, heart, and lungs

Enabling movement through joints and muscles

Storage of minerals such as calcium and phosphate

Formation of blood cells in the bone marrow (hematopoiesis)

Maintaining posture and stability

You will also learn the basic structure of bones, including the difference between compact bone and spongy bone, the structure of long bones (diaphysis, epiphysis, metaphysis), and the significance of the periosteum, medullary cavity, articular cartilage, and epiphyseal plate.

We also introduce the classification of bones — long, short, flat, irregular, sesamoid, and pneumatic bones — which will be explained deeply in the next part of this chapter.
Additionally, we highlight important clinical correlations, including fractures, osteoporosis, bone marrow function, and the role of the skeleton in radiology and surgery.

This video is extremely useful for:
