Scrolling is addictive. It's a form of Dark Pattern exploitation - infinite scroll is worse, but not many people know that scrolling itself is the root of the problem. It works by mimicking the visual flow that usually stimulates and motivates us to move around our environment, but many times stronger (a superstimuli). Also by allowing longer 'pages', it's harder to keep track of information location and total quantity, disorienting the user (critical hit, it was super effective!).
Some stats: Engagement increases from between 15-50% when UI switches from pagination to scrolling (so up to 30% of your time is stolen...). This function disproportionately impacts neurodivergent people and children. The browser extension is step 1, I'd like to unscroll all tech... starting with putting the page back in webpage.
