How much performance do you really lose by virtualizing Ubuntu? 🔎
In this first video of our Database Course series, we prepare the operating system that will be used throughout the course. Ubuntu is one of the most widely supported Linux distributions for database servers and administration tools, making it an ideal platform for learning and deploying DBMSs such as MySQL, MySQL Workbench, PostgreSQL, and others. We install Ubuntu 25.10 on VirtualBox for Windows (including dependency fixes), GNOME Boxes on Arch Linux, and Ubuntu 26.04 LTS on real HP laptop hardware. Finally, we benchmark CPU, memory, and disk performance with Sysbench to compare virtualized and native Ubuntu environments.
