Update: Somebody suggested taking the 2 o-rings off the modified filter. That is a good idea. Another commenter below noted that the 2 inner, circular plastic pieces move together - the pieces are attached. He was able to use a pliers on the larger piece and was successful at turning it.
FINAL UPDATE 2025: This refrigerator broke. The compressor gave out after the 5 year full warranty and now I have a different fridge.
