What is Uma? For the Mentawai, uma is not only a home but also a clan's living space, a sacred place where religious ceremonies are held, and a symbol of community unity.
Why is the Sagu Tree So Important?
Sagu palms are the "tree of life" for the Mentawai. Their trunks are used to make sagunu flour, a staple food, while their leaves are used to cover house roofs, protecting them from rain and sun.
Who is the Noon Angel (Lailatalanggai)? According to Mentawai belief, Lailatalanggai is the guardian spirit of the forest and fertility.
Rituals performed to appease her ensure the tribe's health and abundant hunting.
Worm Gathering Ritual: These worms, collected for offering to the Noon Angel, are part of a ceremony led by the tribal shaman (Sikerei). This is a spiritual connection to nature and an expression of gratitude.
