In this video, I review the popular off-grid solar system kit by Eco-Worthy. For $460, this kit includes two 100W solar panels, a 12V 100Ah lithium battery, a 30A PWM charge controller, a 600W pure sine wave inverter, and various cables and brackets.
Eco-Worthy doesn’t provide a wiring diagram, so I designed one that includes vital upgrades. My setup includes marine-rated fuses, a shunt for battery monitoring, a DC fuse box, and proper grounding. I also added a ground-neutral bond to ensure safe and effective GFCI functionality. These modifications not only enhance safety but also make the system more practical for daily off-grid use. Ever wondered how much energy 200W of solar can generate? Using data from Houston, Texas, I calculated that this kit’s solar panels can harvest an average of 550Wh per day with the included PWM charge controller. I break down what that energy can power: a DC fridge, a laptop, LED lights, and even a DC pump. However, there’s a catch—the inverter consumes significant standby power, so turning it off when not in use is a must. Based on off-grid design theory, solar panels should recharge the battery in one day, and the battery should support three days of autonomy. Unfortunately, this kit’s 200W of solar panels isn’t sufficient to recharge the 1,280Wh battery in a single day. To make the system properly sized, I recommend adding another 200W of solar panels. This would increase energy harvest to 1,100Wh per day, ensuring faster battery recharge and better overall performance.
Always use ferrules when attaching wires to the charge controller. Sloppy connections, like those shown in some instructional videos, can lead to issues down the road.
