Wanting to punish the Chechens, who were constantly committing robberies, especially the villages called Kachkalykovo, where they had stolen our horses, I proposed driving them from the Aksayevsky lands, which they had occupied, initially by agreement with the owners, and later, having strengthened their forces, holding them against their will. In attacking these villages, located in strong and wooded areas, I knew that our losses would be severe if the inhabitants did not first remove their wives, children, and property, which they always defend desperately, and that only an example of terror could force them to remove their wives. With this in mind, I ordered Major General Sysoev of the Don Cossack Army, with a small detachment of troops, and all the Cossacks that could be mustered quickly enough, to surround the village of Dadan-Yurt, located on the Terek, and to offer the inhabitants the opportunity to abandon it. If they resisted, they would be punished with weapons, showing no quarter to anyone. The Chechens ignored this offer and defended themselves fiercely. Almost every homestead was surrounded by a high fence, and each had to be stormed. Many of the residents, when the soldiers broke into their homes, killed their wives in front of them, so as not to fall into their power. Many of the women threw themselves at the soldiers with daggers.
